In the world of luxury vehicles, Mercedes’ electric models are the most significant, offering electric alternatives across many segments. The EQ model family will soon expand with the addition of the Mercedes EQS SUV, which will stand at the top of the range alongside the Mercedes EQS. The new model was revealed in photos and first details at Mercedes’ new battery plant in the US.
EQS, or the Mercedes EQS SUV, is a large recreational vehicle that is also available in a seven-seater version. Based on the EVA platform for electric vehicles, it uses a modular battery pack, which it shares with Mercedes EQS and EQE. This will be the third electric vehicle based on Mercedes’ dedicated platform and the first SUV. Mercedes EQC and EQA are built on platforms intended for vehicles with internal combustion engines that have been converted to electric propulsion.
At this point, the Mercedes EQS SUV was exposed in the photos, wearing camouflage stickers, but through the stickers, you can identify the family front of the electric Mercedes models, which includes a blackened central surface that simulates a front grille, which is connected to the headlights. Two more bumps on the hood can also be seen. The side silhouette is quite low, as is customary in electric recreational vehicles, to maintain a high level of aerodynamic efficiency. The waistline produces muscular shoulders above the rear wheelhouses and the rear window slopes gently backward. At the tail, we are expected to encounter lighting units connected via an LED strip.
Mercedes has unveiled first images of the cabin which showcases the design language we encountered in the electric saloon models. In front is the huge Hyperscreen screen array consisting of three screens with a total size of 56 inches. The vehicle control interface is based on the screens, with almost no physical controls. The cabin abounds in rich ambient lighting which also reaches the rear trim of the seats. The middle row is displayed in a 3-seat configuration with an option for electrical adjustment. At this stage, photos from the third row of seats have not yet been revealed. The full unveiling of the Mercedes EQS SUV will take place on 19.04.2022.
Mercedes’ new battery plant was inaugurated in Tuscany, Bib, Alabama, USA, and is expected to employ about 600 people. The Mercedes EQS SUV will go into production in a few months at the Mercedes plants in the city of Tuscaloosa in the state of Alabama and the supply of batteries will of course come from the newly established plant nearby. The same plant will also include the Mercedes EQE SUV recreational vehicle that will be presented later.
