“We need to make more affordable cars,”; “One of the things that troubles me most is that we don’t yet have a truly affordable car. That is something that we will make in the future.”
Elon Musk (Tesla CEO)
Tesla plans to build a Tesla electric car that’ll cost $25,000 – undercutting the current Model 3. Tesla will do it by using a new technology said to be a “breakthrough” in the world of battery cells.
Tesla’s powertrains manager Drew Baglino outlined what the company has been funding and researching in, moving from a ‘tab’ cell architecture to a cylindrical cell. Baglino noted how this “removes the thermal problem and allows us to go to the absolute lowest cost form factor, and the simplest manufacturing process”.
The new cells contain five times more energy and offer 16 percent more range than existing tech, as well as offering six times the power. The new batteries will also cost half as much as they do today. “It’s not a plan that rests on a single innovation,” explains Baglino. “We need to go beyond what we’re looking at, and study the full spectrum of options.”
